How to Care for Wooden Chopsticks: Cleaning, Drying & Maintenance Guide

A good pair of wooden chopsticks can become an everyday kitchen essential. Unlike disposable chopsticks, reusable wooden chopsticks are designed to be used again and again—but natural wood needs a little care.

Water, heat, food residue and repeated washing can gradually affect the surface of wood. Fortunately, maintaining wooden chopsticks is simple.

In this guide, we'll explain how to clean wooden chopsticks, how to dry and store them properly, when they may need maintenance, and when it is finally time to replace them.

How Should You Clean Wooden Chopsticks?

For everyday care, wash wooden chopsticks soon after eating rather than leaving food residue on the surface for long periods.

Use warm water, mild dish soap and a soft sponge. Gently clean the entire chopstick, paying particular attention to the tips where food most often comes into contact with the wood.

After washing, rinse away the soap thoroughly.

Avoid leaving natural wooden chopsticks soaking in water for extended periods. Wood naturally interacts with moisture, and repeated prolonged soaking can put unnecessary stress on the material.

A simple routine works best:

Wash → Rinse → Dry → Store

Why Drying Wooden Chopsticks Matters

Cleaning is only half of proper wooden chopstick care.

After washing, wipe away excess water with a clean towel and allow the chopsticks to air dry completely before putting them into an enclosed drawer or container.

Storing wooden chopsticks while they are still wet can keep moisture against the surface for longer than necessary.

Good airflow helps the chopsticks dry more evenly.

If you use wooden chopsticks every day, consider storing them somewhere where they can fully dry between meals rather than immediately sealing them inside a container.

Can You Put Wooden Chopsticks in the Dishwasher?

If you use reusable wooden chopsticks every day, you may wonder: can you put wooden chopsticks in the dishwasher?

The short answer is: it depends on how the chopsticks are made and finished.

Most traditional wooden chopsticks, including our current 100% tung oil-finished Simpo Goods wooden chopsticks, should be hand washed rather than placed in the dishwasher.

Why Aren’t Most Wooden Chopsticks Dishwasher Safe?

A dishwasher is much harsher on natural wood than normal hand washing. During a typical dishwasher cycle, wooden chopsticks are exposed to:

  • High temperatures
  • Strong dishwasher detergents
  • Prolonged exposure to water and steam
  • Repeated wet-and-dry cycles

Over time, these conditions can affect both the wood and its protective finish. Repeated dishwasher use may cause wooden utensils to become rough, dry out, warp, crack or lose their original finish.

This is why many wooden kitchen utensils — not just chopsticks — are traditionally recommended for hand washing.

How Should You Wash Wooden Chopsticks?

For our current Simpo Goods wooden chopsticks, we recommend hand washing with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft sponge.

After washing, rinse them thoroughly and allow the chopsticks to dry completely before storing them.

Avoid soaking wooden chopsticks in water for extended periods, and do not put them in the dishwasher unless the product is specifically designed and identified as dishwasher safe.

Are There Dishwasher-Safe Wooden Chopsticks?

This is something we have been working on.

At Simpo Goods, we love the warmth, texture and natural feel of real wood, but we also understand why being able to simply put your reusable chopsticks into the dishwasher would make everyday life much easier.

We are currently developing a dishwasher-safe Simpo wooden chopstick designed to withstand repeated dishwasher cycles while maintaining the look and feel of natural wood.

Our goal is simple: combine the experience of using real wooden chopsticks with the convenience people expect from modern reusable tableware.

They aren't available yet, but they're coming.

We’ll update this article with full care instructions, testing information and product details when our dishwasher-safe wooden chopsticks are ready.

So, Can Simpo Chopsticks Go in the Dishwasher?

For now:

Current 100% tung oil-finished Simpo Goods wooden chopsticks: Hand wash only.

Future dishwasher-safe Simpo wooden chopsticks: In development.

Until your Simpo chopsticks are specifically identified as dishwasher safe, wash them by hand with warm water and mild soap and allow them to dry thoroughly.

We’re working toward making natural wooden chopsticks easier to use every day — without giving up what makes wood special in the first place.

Do Wooden Chopsticks Need Oil?

Sometimes.

Wooden chopsticks can gradually become drier or rougher after repeated use and washing. Whether they should be refinished—and what should be used—depends on the original finish.

Avoid applying an unknown furniture finish or household wood-care product to something that regularly touches your food.

Simpo's natural wood chopsticks are made from hardwood and finished with 100% pure tung oil before handed to you. We also offer Beeswax Chopsticks Care Balm for maintaining the wooden surface.

If your chopsticks begin to look or feel dry, occasional maintenance can help refresh the surface.

How Often Should You Maintain Wooden Chopsticks?

There isn't one maintenance schedule that applies to every pair of wooden chopsticks.

Instead of relying only on a calendar, pay attention to the condition of the wood.

Signs that wooden chopsticks may need maintenance include:

  • The surface looks noticeably dry.
  • The wood feels rougher than when it was new.
  • Water no longer behaves on the surface the way it previously did.
  • The colour of the wood appears dull or faded.

How quickly these changes happen depends on how frequently the chopsticks are used, how they are washed, the type of wood and the original finish.

How Long Do Wooden Chopsticks Last?

There is no universal expiration date for reusable wooden chopsticks.

Their useful life depends heavily on the material, construction, finish, frequency of use and—most importantly—how they are cared for.

At Simpo Goods, we have pairs of wooden chopsticks that we have personally used for years and continue to use today. With regular cleaning, proper drying and occasional maintenance when needed, a well-made pair of wooden chopsticks can remain part of your everyday tableware for a long time.

Instead of automatically throwing away reusable chopsticks after an arbitrary number of months, inspect them periodically.

A well-maintained pair of quality hardwood chopsticks is fundamentally different from a disposable wooden pair designed for a single meal.

When Should You Replace Wooden Chopsticks?

Maintenance can extend the useful life of wooden chopsticks, but it cannot repair every form of damage.

Consider replacing a pair if you notice significant physical deterioration such as deep cracks, splitting, severe warping or damage that makes the surface difficult to clean properly.

The key distinction is between a surface that simply needs maintenance and wood that has become physically damaged.

Minor dryness may be maintainable.

A deep split is a different matter.

Choosing Wooden Chopsticks Designed for Repeated Use

Care starts with the product itself.

When choosing reusable wooden chopsticks, look beyond appearance and consider what information the manufacturer provides about the material and finish.

What species of wood is being used?

What is applied to the surface?

Are the chopsticks intended for repeated use?

How should they be maintained?

Clear answers make it easier to understand what you are using at the table and how to take care of it.

At Simpo Goods, our chopsticks are made in Canada from hardwood, with walnut and cherry options available across several designs. Our natural wood chopsticks use 100% pure tung oil as the finish.

A Small Routine That Helps Your Chopsticks Last

Taking care of wooden chopsticks doesn't need to be complicated.

Wash them after use, avoid unnecessarily long soaking, allow them to dry completely, inspect the wood periodically and maintain the surface when needed.

A few minutes of proper care can help keep a reusable pair of chopsticks in service meal after meal.

And that is ultimately the point of choosing reusable chopsticks: not simply owning them, but continuing to use them.
